I highly recommend the ATLAS.ti online class for beginners. This complex tool is wonderful for qualitative data analysis once you get the hang of it. The course instructor introduced an international group of people from different professional backgrounds to the software and added new information after checking whether we've all understood everything up to that point. He answered most of our questions directly in class and others, which would have take too much of the contact time, in emails afterwards. He set home assignments which were targeted at the contents of each individual lesson, so we could practice the newly acquired knowledge in our own time. What's more, the course instructor replied to emails very quickly (despite the time difference) and offered individual support at several occasions. I am certain that without the online class I wouldn't be able to use ATLAS.ti in a meaningful way. And that would be a real shame ... it's like having a brand new kitchen equipped with all sorts of high-tech appliances and not knowing how to cook.
Dipl.-Päd. Carmen M. Amerstorfer, MEd TESOL, University assistant, PhD student, Alpen-Adria Universität Klagenfurt, Austria
Excellent training program if you've never had any experience with coding software or you need to start a big project!
Professor, University of Alberta, June 23rd 2014
The course was useful for those starting to learn how to use the software. Of course, being an introduction, people remains with doubts and questions.
I hope to group a class of students and follow the next course,
Noemi Spagnoletti researcher IP-USP, Brazil, June 17 2014
ATLAS.ti is a versatile tool for use in several stages of conducting research. It was for example interesting for me to learn that literature review can be conducted within ATLAS.ti.This helps link the analysis with earlier work of developing the study. I was very impressed with the way Dr. Christina Silver handled the course. She made the use of the tool very practical. But of course it was Ricardo who first introduced me to ATLAS.ti and helped up my enthusiasm about using it for my PhD project.
Samuel, PhD student, Lancaster University, June 25th 2014
I am so thankful that I took the course, "ATLAS.ti Introductory Workshop," with Dr. Ricardo Contreras. Dr. Contreras is clearly an expert and very proficient with ATLAS.ti, yet he is also very good at explaining and demonstrating the software in a way that is easy for new users, but also at a pace that is appropriate for users, who have some experience with ATLAS.ti.
I was most impressed that even though I took the course online via web conference, I felt like I was in a classroom with others because Dr. Contreras encouraged interaction and discussion (i.e. we could raise our hands, ask questions, and respond through the web conference application). I highly recommend this course to all users of ATLAS.ti.
Denise Bellows, PhD (c) University of Maryland School of Public Health, September 15th 2014
I attended the basic introductory course in ATLAS.ti via the online webinars. I was invited to attend these courses as part of the student accreditation process. Although I had already received basic, as well as advanced training in ATLAS.ti prior to the webinar, I was still able to learn useful features of the program! It was also very valuable to take careful note of the instructors teaching style (which was excellent), and think about the ways in which I could improve my own. The webinars flowed effortlessly, and extremely well prepared. I enjoyed it very much.
Doctoral student, Stellenbosch University, South Africa, October 12th 2014
I was aware of what the program could do but did not know the technical details of how to work with it. While my qualitative course work discussed the application of computer programs to facilitate qualitative data analysis, it did not get into any of them in detail. This webinar helped me to better understand the use of ATLAS.ti. The materials provided as well as Dr. Friese's book have provided invaluable information as I begin to analyse my data.
Miriam Miranda-Jurado Doctoral Student St. John Fisher College, October 20th 2014
I am a PhD candidate at UBC. I found the Webinars extremely helpful. The presentation style (simplicity of materials and also clear language), depth of presentation, clarity of materials and hand outs, support and responsiveness are are features that you will experience. Most importantly, openness for supports without hesitating to time limit in a reasonable manner give another aspect to the presentations. What I like most about the presentations are two thing: supporting your self-efficacy through step by step presentation of software. And better than that, its applied feature. I mean it is not merely based power point presentation; it is based on "watch one, see one, do one.
Mirkaber Mosavianpour, PhD Candidate, UBC, Canada, October 14th 2014
The ATLAS.ti instruction provided by Dr. Contreras was very thorough and, most importantly, very practical. He was constantly providing hands-on applications related to the analytical thinking that is necessary to make this software fully applicable to real research projects. These examples helped me realize not only the ways that I can apply ATLAS.ti to my projects, but also expand my thinking about methods for analyzing qualitative research more broadly.
Carly Hutchinson, PhD Researcher, Columbia University, October 14th 2014
This course has made it possible for me to begin coding my data effectively as soon as I get the software installed.
Researcher, October 20th 2014
I am a doctoral student currently engaged in qualitative research that will be greatly supported by the use of ATLAS.ti. Moreover, I'm delighted to be on the cutting-edge of learning and use of the Mac version of the program. Chitung Said, Programme Quality & Learning Manager at Restless Development in Tanzania., November 13th 2014
The hands-on presentation was very helpful for developing a better understanding of the technical features of the program. I had taken the six-hour webinar but still had some questions that the face-to face session with the instructor helped to clarify.
Doctoral Student, November 20th 2014
The ATLAS.ti Training was extremely helpful. Ricardo was a great instructor! He explained the software from a researchers perspective and provided straighforward examples of every concept discussed. He also sent materials in advance to help us prepare and offered to follow-up with us after the sessions to answer any questionst hat were not covered in the semiar. My colleague and I were very impressed and have already shared our notes with others. Thanks Ricardo for opening our eyes to the vast world of ATLAS.ti!
