In 1993, Thomas Muhr released the first commercial version under the company name "Scientific Software Development," now ATLAS.ti GmbH.
Mr. Muhr led the company for close to 20 years, seeing it grow continuously and garner an increasing share of the growing QDA software market.
Today, the program is sold and used around the world, with major organizations and corporate players among its enthusiastic users. The likes of Microsoft, the United Nations, the World Bank, Google, Boeing, and nearly every major university in the world rely on ATLAS.ti for their qualitative data analysis needs.
In 1999, Thomas Muhr brought the management consultant Jörg Hecker into the company. He took care of all business-relevant and strategic issues of the company, first as a consultant, later as COO.
In 2021, Jörg Hecker took over the management of ATLAS.ti as sole CEO, a position he continues to hold today.
In 2024, ATLAS.ti was acquired by Lumivero, LLC, a leading provider of qualitative data analysis solutions. Lumivero, which also develops NVivo, strengthened its portfolio through this strategic acquisition, offering a wider range of tools for qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method research. This acquisition will enhance the development of new features and expand SaaS offerings for ATLAS.ti, benefitting users across industries.
