March 19, 2018

This time we interview Gabriel Celestino Rosa, Psychology student at the Universidad La Salle, Canoas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Thank you Grabriel for talking with us.  Tell us about yourself.

I am a Psychology student at La Salle University in Brazil. I have a PROBIC – FAPERGS research grant. I also work as a photographer, producer and audiovisual publisher. Currently I participate in two research projects, one examining exchange experiences in higher education with emphasis on the establishment of interethnic relations, coordinated by Dr. Leonidas Taschetto of the University of La Salle, and another one studying stereotypes and prejudices related to race and ethnicity in Brazil and the USA, coordinated by Dr. Eros DeSouza of Illinois State University.

In what projects are you using ATLAS.ti?

I currently participate in two research projects, the first about the experiences of academic mobility in higher education with emphasis on the establishment of interethnic relations, coordinated by Dr. Leonidas Taschetto of the University of La Salle and the second about stereotypes and prejudices related to race and ethnicity in Brazil and the USA, coordinated by Dr. Eros DeSouza of Illinois State University. I use ATLAS.ti to assist me in the process of analysis from the theoretical methodological principles of the Grounded Theory according Strauss and Corbin.

I use ATLAS.ti Mac, I organize and systematize the different steps of coding a large amount of interview and focus groups data. The software has allowed us to build the grounded theory analysis in a very intuitive way.  The way the data is organized from my coding allow me to clarify issues or questions and, in some cases, highlights new directions for the analysis or helps me to identify new phenomena that require further attention on my part. In the future, we will use ATLAS.ti to analyze data collected through Google forms about exchange students. I envision that ATLAS.ti will continue to be essential for our research.

Would you like to add anything else?

Yes. The software has helped me deeply in the analysis of my research data in projects related to education and social psychology. Its interface is intuitive and clear, helping to visualize amounts of data in a systematic and organized way. I am very pleased with everything I have learned over the last few months.
