ATLAS.ti 7 – The Qualitative Data Analysis Software That Gets Your Work Done – Efficiently, Smoothly, and Enjoyably!

August 15, 2012

With the release of ATLAS.ti 7, a new era of qualitative data analysis has begun.

No other software makes coding and analyzing your “soft” data (text, images, geodata, audio or video) easier, more efficient, or more intuitive. The acronym “VISE” encapsulates the immense power and flexibility that can be leveraged on your research through the innate design concepts of this latest incarnation of the long established and ever-trendsetting QDA packages:

Visualization: Work naturally–not from abstract lists removed from your data but right on the actual material itself. The margin area, the arguably the most natural and intutive area to work (think: notes on a book page!) is the central location for all your coding. Only ATLAS.ti lets you select segments, display your codings and notes, and interlink them with one another in the same document or across documents in this way. Work with audio and video just as natural as you are used to with text and images. Cloud views, integrated frequency bars, a superb network editor, list previews of documents — they are all available right where they should be.

Integration: Draw from the widest possible range of data in the most economic fashion. Reduce the need for open windows drastically; everything is always right where you need it. On-screen economy is a central, albeit often under-appreciated factor when dealing with substantial amounts of data.

Serendipity: Discover the unexpected in your data. Create and navigate your hyperlinks between sections of text, images, audio and video in the most natural synoptic way with up to 4 documents displayed side-by-side.

Exploration: Delve into your material and draw on powerful analytical tools, centrally organized and immediately accessible. Feed analytical results straight back into your discovery of the material. The co-occurrence table tool, the codes-documents table, the neat side panel filter area for the item managers, the search field let you comfortably find your way through thousands of items in milliseconds.

Behind the scene works a new powerful data management system that keeps all project-related documents in a secure, scalable data repository.

All these aspects make it clear that the new edition of ATLAS.ti is a thoughtful and thorough re-design of a highly successful software package, a package that has been the de-facto gold standard in qualitative data analysis for nearly twenty years.

Always the innovation leader in the field, ATLAS.ti yet again sets new standards as powerful new innovations in multiple areas make ATLAS.ti 7 a true joy to work with. Among them rank most prominent: Multimedia, multi-document view, secure document management, network views (= highly sophisticated graphic representations of the interrelations of your data material), innovative analytical tools, as well as numerous changes and optimizations of the user interface.

ATLAS.ti 7 now gives you access down to the individual frame of a video and the individual sample of audio recordings.

For each multimedia file you get full frame-by-frame preview and a zoomable display of the audio wave form. Navigation is highly precise.

Videos can be displayed in the main program window, or flown out in a separate window for optimal viewing and use of the work area.

Audio and video now share ATLAS.ti’s central metaphor for presenting and working with content: the margin area. Text, PDF, images, audio, video – all utilize the same powerful workspace, arguably the most natural “work environment” for the qualitative researcher.

Multimedia quotations can be treated exactly like text passages: They have a full-fledged margin area for coding, linking and commenting. Codes are displayed where you would expect them, right next to the quotation segment.

Multi Document View

You can now load up to four documents into the new HU editor document regions for simultaneous viewing.

Automatically load corresponding documents (such as transcripts) in parallel next to one another and display them in sync. For example, play a segment from a video by marking it in the transcript, and vice versa.

Display the regular margin area along with the loaded documents and code in either document. You can also create direct hyperlinks between the multiple documents.

Documents can be rearranged according to your preference on the screen.

You can open and work on up to four different documents of any type at once in this way. This opens up phantastic new possibilities for comparative work of all kinds.

Side Panels

New interactive side panels let you maximize the available workspace while giving you immediate access to pre-selected lists of objects at all times.

Panels can be minimized and resized, and be used for any purpose, such as coding, creating hyperlinks, and access management to your primary documents. They can be displayed briefly or docked for permanent use.

ATLAS.ti’s Semantic network views have been drastically improved, both visually and functionally.

Nodes can now be dragged with full view and flicker-free zoomed to any depth.

Dedicated connection handles let you create semantic hyperlinks right in the graphic view.

Switch between different states of display, resize nodes freely, and rearrange even complex view automatically with an animated layout. If you prefer a sparcer scientific look, you can remove all optical attributes.

You can filter nodes according to certain criteria, or display only the codes associated with a particular document (with proper page preview).

Of course, all networks can be printed in high quality or saved as a PDF file.

The use of clouds is another new feature in ATLAS.ti 7: The Word Cruncher can display word frequencies as a Word Cloud to make for quick, intuitive work flow.

Faders let you control the display of word frequency and select a cut-off for words you want filtered out.

You can then directly code your documents for the selected words. This is another significant improvement to increase the work flow and make for intuitive control over your data.

Test It For Yourself!

While the list of radical new features could go on and on, the makers of ATLAS.ti encourage you not to simply take their word for the quality of this professional-level analysis tool. Rather, everyone is invited to download and test the free trial version of ATLAS.ti for themselves; the trial version is available from

Users everywhere are already enthusiastic of the new generation of ATLAS.ti–both users experienced with older versions of the program as well as droves of new users flock to meet their data analysis needs by switching to ATLAS.ti 7.
